Riverton Police Accident Reports

A car accident can happen in an instant, and while some crashes are caused by weather or road conditions, most stem from common driving errors, such as:

  • Speeding
  • Following too closely
  • Failure to yield or respect right-of-way
  • Driving while drowsy or tired
  • Driving under the influence
  • Lack of signaling
  • Lane-changing errors
  • Reckless driving or “road rage” incidents

Once a negligent driver has caused an accident, that may only be the beginning of your difficulties. Painful injuries, medical bills, lost income, and other challenges could soon become overwhelming.

Unfortunately, seeking help from an insurance company can also be fraught with obstacles, especially if your accident qualifies for an at-fault claim.

If you’ve been in an accident, report it to the local authorities immediately and get medical attention for any injuries, even if they seem minor. After you’ve received medical care, it’s a good idea to access a copy of the police report and discuss it with a seasoned personal injury attorney.

At Valley Law Accident & Injury Lawyers, we’re always available to answer your questions and outline your options for obtaining compensation after a car accident.

Where Can You Get Your Riverton Police Department Car Accident Report?

To obtain a Riverton Police Department car accident report, you must submit a written request to the Records Officer, providing a detailed description that reasonably identifies the specific requested record. They offer an online form so you can place your request from home.

A closeup of a dented and torn front end of a car damaged in an accident. You’ll enter standard contact information (name, address, phone number, email address) and the record details. Because Utah limits who can acquire a car accident report to involved parties and their representatives, you will be asked to upload a scan of your photo ID for identification purposes.

How Should You Describe Your Request?

The ideal way to be specific about your request is to include the case number, which you can find on the paperwork provided by the responding officer. The case number is not a required field on the form, but it will make finding your report much more straightforward.

If you cannot find the case number, offer other specifics, such as the date, location, and approximate time of the collision. Aside from the street name, it can be helpful to add the nearest cross street or mile marker to narrow down where the accident occurred.

You will be asked if you want to receive a digital copy of the report or view it at Riverton City Hall. Viewing the records is free; a digital copy is usually $10, and if photos from the accident scene are available, you can get them on a CD for $20.

Since car accident records are not public in Utah, you’ll be asked to explain why you should have access to the records. Drivers, passengers, injured people, or owners of damaged property should select “I am the subject of the record.”

Once you finish the form and submit it, the Riverton Police Department should respond within ten business days.

If you prefer to make your request in person, you can visit the Riverton Police Department during standard business hours at:

12810 South Redwood Rd

Riverton, UT 84065

Remember to bring your photo ID.

Will Your No-Fault Personal Injury Protection (PIP) Insurance Cover Your Accident?

Maybe. Misconceptions about PIP and Utah’s no-fault rules are common.

Some people believe all accidents are no-fault or that PIP should cover all their damages, but this isn’t true. Here are some facts about PIP and no-fault insurance in Utah:

  • PIP is intended to reduce lawsuits over minor car accidents. Utah residents must carry $3,000 in PIP coverage, which should pay for medical bills and some of the lost income associated with a car accident up to that limit. This is “no-fault” coverage, so there is no need to show liability.
  • If your medical bills exceed $3,000, you can seek damages from the at-fault party by making a claim on their liability insurance. Utah requires a minimum of $25,000 per person in bodily injury liability ($65,000 per accident) and $15,000 for property damage. This will require a determination of fault, and the insurance adjuster can deny your claim if they believe you were at least 50 percent responsible. Additionally, they can reduce your settlement if they think you have some fault below 50 percent.
  • You can also file an at-fault claim if you suffer a permanent disability, disfigurement, or impairment from the accident or if a loved one lost their life. If you’re not sure whether you qualify for an at-fault claim, your lawyer can help you learn more.
  • PIP does not cover property damage or pain and suffering, and only covers up to 85 percent of your lost income. However, there may be other ways to recover these losses, depending on the situation.
  • Optional policies like Medical Payments and Collision can offer extra protection. For instance, these may help with medical bills and car repairs if you can’t prove the other driver is at fault.
  • PIP coverage can’t be denied over fault, but you could be turned down for other reasons. For example, the adjuster may think your injuries weren’t caused by the accident or that your treatment was unnecessary or excessive.
