Car accidents are often caused by factors such as speeding, distracted driving, or disregarding traffic signals. Even if you do your best to drive safely, you can’t control other drivers on the road.
Another motorist’s negligence can lead to an accident, resulting in painful injuries, costly car repairs, and missed work.
Often, injured people expect their Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance (required in Utah) to cover their medical bills and lost income. Although PIP is a no-fault policy designed to help with these losses, it is limited, and only $3,000 coverage is required.
While you can purchase additional PIP or Medical Payments coverage, many people only carry the basic amount, and even those with more coverage may find that a serious injury quickly exceeds their policy limits.
What can you do when medical bills, lost wages, and other expenses surpass your PIP coverage? If your medical costs exceed $3,000, you can seek compensation from the at-fault driver’s insurance.
However, this opens the door for the insurance company to contest your claim based on fault, unlike PIP coverage, which operates under a “no-fault” system.
Since proving fault may be a key factor in your case, obtaining a copy of your accident report and speaking with an experienced car accident lawyer is vital. At Valley Law Accident & Injury Lawyers, we offer free consultations to help you understand your legal options and address any questions you may have.
The Weber County Sheriff’s Office usually responds to car accidents outside a city police department’s jurisdiction. If you’re unsure which agency responded to your collision (a common concern), check the piece of paper provided by the officer at the scene.
It should list the agency and provide a case number that will help in locating your police report.
You can request a copy of your report in person at:
Weber County Sheriff’s Office,
1400 Depot Drive
Ogden, UT 84401
They are open Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM. Please bring your driver’s license or another state-issued ID.
For many people, it may be more convenient to request your car accident report online using the Weber County Sheriff’s Office portal. In the request description box, include your case number and other relevant information about the accident, including the date, approximate time, and location.
Names of involved parties are also helpful.
Because Utah privacy laws limit access to car accident reports, you should also explain your involvement in the collision. Although car accident reports are unavailable to the public, involved parties and their representatives can usually obtain a report without issue.
Involved parties include drivers, passengers, injured parties, owners of involved vehicles, or owners of other damaged property (such as a building or fence).
If you are the parent of a minor child involved in the collision, explain that you are pursuing a copy of the report on their behalf.
Next, you’ll be asked for your contact information. The Weber County Sheriff’s Office stresses that it’s essential to include your full name and email address, as they typically email reports to requestors.
The fee is $15, and there may be additional costs if you want accident scene photos.
The Weber County Sheriff’s Office asks that you allow them ten business days to respond to your request. If it has been longer than ten days, call them at (801) 399-8030 or email javery@webercountyutah.gov to learn more.
Police reports are crucial in helping to determine fault in an accident. Because PIP is no-fault insurance, many people think car accident police reports are not necessary for a PIP claim.
But there are several reasons you may benefit from securing a copy of your accident report anyway:
