A man hit by a car over the weekend in Summit County has died from his injuries, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
The same crash also led to a large drug bust in a separate investigation.
Just after 9 a.m. Saturday, a BMW collided with another car in the intersection of state Route 224 and Ute Boulevard, according to a police booking affidavit. Troopers said they were still investigating Monday whether the BMW ran a red light.
After colliding with the car, the BMW went over a raised divider in the road where a 56-year-old man was standing and hit the man. The man was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. He died from his injuries Monday morning, said UHP Sgt. Cameron Roden. His name has not yet been released.
After hitting the pedestrian, the BMW continued into oncoming traffic where it struck a third vehicle, a Hyundai Tucson, the affidavit states. After both vehicles came to a stop, the driver of the Hyundai got out of his SUV and ran off, according to the UHP.
As troopers were investigating the crash, they discovered approximately 200 pounds of marijuana in the abandoned SUV, according to the affidavit.
On Sunday, Darrell Chris Gutierrez, 48, went to the towing yard that had taken the Hyundai away from the crash scene. He was driven to the yard by another man. Both men then asked a tow company employee what happened to the items that were in the vehicle, acceding to the affidavit.
Just as the men were leaving, UHP troopers arrived and stopped them. Gutierrez, who has a Texas driver’s license, was the person who had rented the Hyundai and admitted to troopers that his chest hurt from the airbags going off during the crash, the affidavit states.
Gutierrez was arrested for investigation of failing to remain at the scene of a serious accident, drug possession with intent to distribute, and possessing at least 100 pounds of marijuana.
