3 people killed in separate Utah crashes over 4th of July weekend

Truck damaged from crash

SALT LAKE CITY — The 4th of July weekend was a deadly one on Utah’s roads as at least three people died in separate crashes across the state.

About 6:41 a.m. on Saturday troopers say a Ford Ranger that was traveling on state route 189 in Wasatch County near Deer Creek State Park left the roadway for an unknown reason.

The pickup truck overcorrected across the road and rolled down an embankment, ejecting the driver, 56-year-old Kelly C. Sabey, of Wallsburg, Wasatch County. He died as a result of his injuries.

The next crash occurred about 10:05 a.m. Saturday on Interstate 70 near Sevier, when a Harley Davidson motorcycle left the road to the left and went into the median.

Troopers do not know what caused the motorcycle to leave the road. The driver lost control after a short distance and rolled, according to the UHP.

“The driver and bike rolled about 50 yards before coming to rest still in the median,” troopers said.

The man, 52, was taken to a hospital in critical condition, where he died about four hours later. His name has not yet been released.

About 2:33 p.m. on Saturday a man, 54, was driving a Victory motorcycle north on S.R. 12, south of Grover, in Wayne County, when he failed to negotiate a curve in the road and went off an embankment, the Utah Highway Patrol said.

The driver, who was alone on the motorcycle, was thrown from the bike and landed on a large pile of boulders, according to troopers.

He was flown to a hospital, where he died later Saturday. The man’s name has not yet been released.

On Friday, a westbound vehicle on S.R. 9 near Quail Creek Drive crossed over into the eastbound lanes, hitting and killing the driver of a pickup truck, a 23-year-old man whose name has not yet been released.
