7-month-old boy dies after rollover accident on I-84 in Weber Canyon

A 7-month-old boy died after a rollover accident on Interstate 84, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

The crash took place Tuesday afternoon near the mouth of Weber Canyon in South Weber, according to UHP Sgt. Cameron Roden.

A westbound Honda Odyssey with five occupants from Evanston, Wyo., lost control, spun off the right side of the freeway and rolled at about 2:50 p.m. Three occupants of the van received minor injuries, but the 7-month-old was critically injured and died after being transported to a hospital, a UHP news release said Tuesday night.

The child’s identity was not released.

The crash blocked both directions of the freeway for a time, but as of 8 p.m., the crash scene had been cleared, according to the Utah Department of Transportation.

UDOT is asking drivers to slow down when traveling on I-84, especially between Mountain Green and the mouth of Weber Canyon, where several crashes have occurred in the past few days, according to a statement from the agency. Inclement weather over the past week has left a fine film of ice on the roadway surface that is hard to see. The ice forms on areas of the road that are usually shaded, but drivers should be cautious and prepare to encounter ice at any moment on that stretch of I-84, UDOT said.

UDOT crews are treating the road regularly and are updating electronic signs in the area to warn drivers of potentially icy conditions.

“As winter conditions persist, motorists should leave plenty of time to reach their destination safely,” UDOT said in a news release. “On snow and ice, go slowly, no matter what type of vehicle you drive. Leave extra room between you and the vehicle in front of you. Brake early, brake slowly, brake correctly and never slam on the brakes.”
