Child dies, 3 others critically injured in multivehicle crash on I-215 in Midvale

Police investigating crash

MIDVALE — A 6-year-old boy died and three people are in critical condition following a crash involving six vehicles on westbound I-215 Thursday afternoon.

About 4:18 p.m., a Volvo semitruck hauling six vehicles on an auto carrier was driving west on I-215 in Midvale, the Utah Highway Patrol said.

Based on early investigation, troopers believe that the semitruck was traveling at a “high rate of speed” when it approached slow-moving traffic in the right lane just before the merging lane onto westbound Union Park. It then struck a Hyundai Palisade occupied by a woman and three children, UHP Sgt. Cameron Roden said.

“Following the initial impact with the Hyundai Palisade, the Volvo semitruck impacted four other vehicles which came to rest blocking all of I-215 westbound,” the UHP said.

Three of the Hyundai’s occupants suffered serious to critical injuries and were taken to local hospitals. A 6-year-old boy in the car later died at a hospital, troopers said. The boy had been traveling with his mother and two sisters, whom troopers said are expected to survive. As of Thursday night, one of the sisters’ conditions had significantly improved.

A family member of established a GoFundMe campaign* to raise money for funeral and medical expenses. Relatives identified the boy as Edison Kimball.

Six additional people who were in the four other vehicles were taken to hospitals with minor to serious injuries.

The highway patrol’s Major Crash Investigation Team and the State Bureau of Investigation are investigating the crash.

No citations were issued at the scene; however, prosecutors are expected to screen the case.

The crash forced the closure of westbound I-215 South at Union Park Ave. for several hours, and the Union Park Ave. on-ramp was also closed.
