A man was arrested Thursday after police believe that he caused a car accident while allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol with six children in the car.
The six children were all transported to the hospital with injuries, according to police. The police report states that only one of the children was wearing a seat belt, and that there was a 4-year-old child who did not have a car seat.
The man, Sharanjit Singh Multani, 37, was believed to be traveling south on 4000 West in South Jordan at a “very high rate of speed” before losing control of the vehicle, according to a jail booking affidavit. The vehicle was slowed by a guard rail, which kept it from launching off the road and down a 30-foot retaining wall, the statement said.
Police reported that there were signs of physical impairment, including an odor of alcohol, and a breath test confirmed that the incident was a DUI, the affidavit states.
The man was arrested for investigation of six counts of reckless endangerment, six counts of DUI with a minor in the vehicle, one count of reckless driving and four counts regarding seat belt safety for children.
