Speeding, running red lights, and other driving errors can quickly cause a car accident that leaves you dealing with painful injuries. Depending on the extent of your injuries, your own Personal Injury Protection insurance (required in Utah) may take care of your medical bills.

However, if your injuries lead to over $3,000 in healthcare expenses, you might need to seek compensation from the at-fault driver’s insurance company. Their insurance adjuster will likely search for reasons to reduce your settlement—or avoid paying it entirely.

Meanwhile, you could struggle with medical bills, pain, and possibly losing time at work due to your injuries.

If you’ve been injured in a car accident, it’s advisable to seek out a copy of your car accident report and discuss it with an experienced car accident attorney. Valley Law Accident & Injury Lawyers offer free consultations so you can get your questions answered and learn your options.

How to Get a Bountiful Police Car Accident Report

The Bountiful Police Department accepts accident report requests in person, online, or by mail. The department’s address is:

805 South Main Street

Bountiful, Utah 84010

Two vehicles, one black and one white, after a collision between the two on a road on the daytime. They are open from 8:30 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday. If your accident happened within the last few days, you may want to call ahead to determine if your report is ready yet.

The Records Division can be reached at (801) 298-6056.

If you’d like to mail in your request, you can access the request form here. Please print the form, fill it out, and send it to the abovementioned address.

You’ll need to know the accident’s date, time, and location, and should include the case or incident number if you have one. Usually, this is provided by the responding officer at the accident scene.

Finally, you can use this portal to place your request online through the state’s Government Records Access and Management Act (GRAMA) system. You will need the same information, but your request will be received more quickly with an online submission.

The Bountiful PD’s website states that requests may take up to ten days to process, depending on whether the accident is still under investigation. In some cases, it may take longer.

If the department is dealing with a larger number of requests than usual, it could take up to four weeks before they can respond.

There is a $10 fee for a report copy if your request is approved. If you want pictures, there is an additional $25 charge when photos are available.

Can Anyone Seek a Copy of a Bountiful Car Accident Report?

No. Police reports are protected under state privacy laws. However, your request will usually be approved if you are the report’s subject or their representative.

For example, the following people can generally obtain a car accident report:

  • A driver or passenger involved in the accident
  • Anyone who suffered injuries or property damage in the collision (for instance, an injured pedestrian or a vehicle owner)
  • An insurance agent or lawyer representing one of the people mentioned above
  • A parent or legal guardian of a minor who was involved in the accident

What Else Should I Do After My Car Accident?

Here are several steps that can make the insurance claim process go more smoothly:

Document Your Injuries

Always see a healthcare provider if you notice any pain or symptoms after an accident, even if you don’t believe these injuries are severe. Some people feel worse the next day or don’t recover from a “minor” injury as quickly as expected.

Seeing a doctor allows you to get treatment right away, rule out more serious injuries, and document your injuries so it will be easier to seek reimbursement from the insurance carrier.

Save All Receipts and Paperwork

If you have medical bills, car repair estimates, or receipts for related costs, always save these in case the insurance company needs them.

Take Pictures of Vehicle Damage and Injuries

We advise taking as many pictures as possible and capturing the damage to both vehicles from all angles. Additionally, photos of the surrounding area, including the road, are helpful—always look for tire or skid marks on the pavement.

Photos of visible injuries—bruises, scratches, stitches—are also recommended.

Once you have these photos, you should share them with your attorney, and you may also need to submit them with your insurance claim. However, you should not post about your car accident online. Insurance adjusters often look at accident victims’ social media profiles for any sign the injured person was even partially at fault for the collision.

Seek Legal Advice Right Away

Before speaking with an insurance adjuster, consult a knowledgeable car accident lawyer. Conversations with insurance adjusters can be tricky—they may seem friendly and helpful but might misinterpret something you say to mean you were at fault.

If your healthcare costs are over $3,000, proving fault may be essential to receive appropriate compensation.
