Experiencing a car accident can be highly stressful, especially if you’re injured. You could be in pain, out of work for weeks or even months, and struggling to pay medical bills and other expenses.

Unfortunately, many people find that trying to get help from an insurance company adds even more stress to an already challenging situation.

But what about no-fault insurance—shouldn’t that be easier?

In limited situations, yes. However, Utah’s mandatory Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance only covers up to $3,000 in medical expenses.

If your injuries are minor and your costs fall within this window, chances are you will not have difficulty recovering your medical bills and some of your lost income.

But if your medical costs are over $3,000 or you suffered a permanent disability or impairment, you may need to pursue compensation from the at-fault driver’s liability insurance. An at-fault claim often triggers a dispute over who was responsible for the accident.

At the same time, insurance adjusters might try to downplay your injuries or undervalue the extent of your damages.

Liability concerns like these frequently prompt injured people to request copies of their car accident reports. Once you have your police report, consulting a car accident lawyer can help you better understand your options for pursuing compensation.

How to Get Your Lindon Police Department Car Accident Report

The Lindon City Police Department’s report request form is available online. The form asks for typical contact information, including your name, address, phone number, and email address.

A dark blue car hood crumpled from a car accident with another vehicle out of focus in the far background. You will also be asked the reason for the “Requested Record Status” to determine your involvement in the collision. Utah’s privacy laws typically restrict access to accident reports, allowing only those directly involved or representing a party in the accident to obtain them.

If you were a driver, passenger, injured individual, or the owner of damaged property, select “I am an involved party in a traffic accident,” which is the first option.

If you need the report because your minor child was involved in a collision, you can choose the fourth option, “I am the parent or legal guardian of the subject of the requested record.”

Next, you’ll be asked for the case number, which you can find on the paperwork furnished by the responding officer at the scene.

The next field seeks a description of the requested records. Please include relevant information like the date, location, and approximate time of the accident.

Make an effort to be as specific as possible, especially if you can’t find the case number. Mentioning nearby cross streets or addresses may be more helpful than simply listing the street name.

After you sign and date the form, you should bring it to the Lindon Police Department during regular business hours. The address is:

90 North State Street

Lindon, UT 84042

Please have your state-issued ID when you drop off your request form. After the request is placed, you can expect to hear back within ten business days.

How Do You Prove Fault in a Car Accident?

If you have concerns about proving fault, the best next step is to speak to a personal injury lawyer. We can assist you in uncovering the evidence you need to show the other driver was all or primarily at fault.

Here are some examples of how we may help:

  • We can conduct a deeper investigation. Although the police report is an important piece of evidence, sometimes it doesn’t tell the whole story. When conflicting accounts and minimal evidence are present at the scene, the responding officer may find it challenging to pinpoint the exact cause of the accident. However, our investigative team can gather additional evidence, such as witness testimonies, video footage from nearby cameras, or data from the vehicles’ event data recorders (EDRs).
  • If we uncover inaccuracies, we may challenge the report. Should we find evidence suggesting that the report is incorrect or doesn’t include vital information, we may be able to contest its findings.
  • We can help you understand your report. Police reports can be perplexing, and many people aren’t familiar with how to interpret them. We can clarify any parts of the report that may be difficult to understand, helping to avoid potential misinterpretations.
  • We can evaluate your level of fault and fight for fair treatment from the insurance company. If the report assigns you partial fault for the accident, it doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t recover damages. Under Utah’s comparative fault laws, you may still be able to receive compensation if you are found less than 50% at fault. However, insurance adjusters could aggrandize your contributions, leaving you with a smaller settlement than you should receive. We will work to make sure the insurance adjuster assigns fault fairly and doesn’t place undue blame on you.
