Driving mistakes such as speeding, distraction, or running red lights can quickly result in a car accident, often leaving the involved parties with painful injuries. In Utah, your Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance, which is mandatory, may cover your medical expenses depending on the severity of your injuries.

It’s helpful to know if your medical costs exceed $3,000, you might need to pursue damages from the at-fault driver’s insurance policy. Unfortunately, the insurance adjuster will likely try to minimize or deny your claim, which could leave you facing mounting medical bills, physical pain, and lost income from time off work.

If you’ve sustained injuries in a car accident, securing a copy of the accident report and consulting with a knowledgeable car accident attorney is essential. Valley Law Accident & Injury Lawyers provides free consultations, allowing you to get answers to your questions and understand your legal options.

Where Can You Get a Logan Police Department Car Accident Report?

The City of Logan maintains an online form for records requests. You will need to include the following information:

  • Name, address, phone number, and email address.
  • The case number. You should find this number on any paperwork the responding officer gave you.
  • The date and location of the accident.
  • An explanation of what record you’re requesting and your involvement in the accident.

The driver's side door of a red car caved in after another vehicle collided with it.The last point is the one that most often sparks confusion. Utah privacy laws permit the release of accident records to individuals who were involved in the accident in some way—as a driver, passenger, injured party, or an owner of damaged property.

A parent or legal guardian of an injured minor can also request a report on their behalf. Finally, representatives for involved parties—for example, a lawyer or insurance agent—can also request these documents.

For this reason, you should state your involvement in the accident clearly and explain that you are seeking the police accident report. If you want pictures from the crash scene, please mention that as well.

Once you have filled out the form, click “Submit,” and it will be processed.

What if You Want to Request a Report In Person?

You may visit the Logan Police Department during normal business hours at:

62 West 300

North Logan, UT 84321

Please bring your state-issued ID for identification purposes.

How Long Does It Take to Receive a Logan Police Department Car Accident Report, and What Is the Cost?

The Logan Police Department will respond to your request as quickly as possible, but sometimes, it may take up to ten business days. If you haven’t heard anything after that time, you can call (435) 716-9300 during normal business hours to follow up.

Accident reports are $10. If you request accident scene photos, they are $1 per printed page, with up to five pictures per page.

Alternatively, you can order photos on a CD or flash drive for $25.

Once your request has been processed and approved, a Records clerk will call you to discuss payment options.

What Happens After You Receive Your Logan Police Car Accident Report?

The next step is usually filing an insurance claim to recover your damages. However, we recommend that you consult a seasoned car accident lawyer first for several reasons:

  • We can help you determine what type of claim to file. In some cases, you may need to file a claim with your own insurance company, with the other driver’s insurance company, or both.
  • We can assist you in communicating with the insurance company. Conversations with insurance adjusters can be more complicated than they appear, especially when dealing with an at-fault claim. Sometimes, a claims adjuster might interpret an innocent remark to mean you were at fault for the collision.
  • We’ll help you determine fault if you’re unsure or think you might be responsible. If you believe you might be at fault in a car accident, don’t say so at the scene or discuss it with anyone besides your attorney. People often make incorrect assumptions about fault in a car accident, and you may not be to blame.
  • We’ll work to determine each driver’s percentage of fault if necessary. Many car accidents also involve shared fault—in other words, both drivers made mistakes that contributed to the collision. When these situations occur, ascertaining each party’s percentage of fault is critical. If you are less than 50 percent responsible, you can still collect damages from the other driver’s policy, but your settlement will be reduced by your share of fault. Sometimes, insurance adjusters overestimate an injured party’s level of culpability, costing them thousands of dollars or more. Your attorney will fight for a fair estimate of your contributions.
  • We’ll work to ensure your damages are valued correctly. Another potential difficulty arises when the insurance adjuster overlooks some damages or undervalues their worth. The average layperson doesn’t know how to value a car accident claim and may assume the insurance adjuster’s offer is adequate. If it isn’t, they might never know they’re entitled to a larger settlement. For this reason, we encourage you to discuss any offer from an insurance company with a lawyer before signing, even if you filed the claim yourself.
