It’s common for people to have questions about car insurance after an accident. Many don’t know what their insurance covers, whose insurance to pursue compensation from, or even who was at fault for the accident.

Others are unsure what’s covered by Personal Injury Protection or PIP insurance, which is required in Utah.

Even after making a claim, challenges may arise. You might find that the other driver or their insurance adjuster blames you for the accident.

Or, you may wonder if the insurance company’s settlement offer covers all your damages.

An experienced car accident lawyer can help by answering your questions, outlining your options, and assisting with your claim. We can even review your settlement offer before you accept to ensure nothing has been overlooked.

The best way to begin seeking compensation for your claim is to acquire a copy of your police car accident report and review it with a car accident attorney. The Valley Law Accident & Injury Lawyers team is always available to offer a free consultation about your report and car accident claim, so please contact us today to learn more.

How to Get Your Murray City Police Department Car Accident Report

The Murray City Police Department provides an online request form for Government Records Access and Management Act (GRAMA) requests. Because of Utah privacy laws, accident reports are generally released only to the following:

  • Two grey cars caught in an accident with the front end of one crumpling the door of another.Involved parties—drivers, passengers, injured parties, or owners of damaged property.
  • Family members of an involved party with a signed waiver or parents/legal guardians of an involved minor.
  • An insurance agent or attorney representing an involved party.

After completing the form, the police department advises that you contact them at (801) 264-2673 to inquire about the options for submitting it. You may need to deliver the form in person and show your ID.

The address for the Murray City Police Department is:

10 E. 4800 S. #101

Murray, UT 84107

The Murray City Police Department also suggests that you wait 5-10 days after the accident to begin the request process. This allows the responding officer time to complete the report.

What Is on the Report Request Form?

The form starts by asking for a description of the report you need. It’s advisable to include the case number, usually provided by the responding officer at the accident scene.

However, accident scenes can be chaotic, and we often meet people who have lost track of the paperwork. If you don’t have the case number, give the accident’s date, approximate time, and location with as much specificity as possible.

Try to include the nearest cross street and the names of all involved parties.

Next, there are several options for accessing the records. You can inspect the records without taking a copy home, but we recommend seeking your own copy to review it again later.

The fee is $15 per copy. If you cannot afford the fee, you could request a fee waiver, but you may need to provide proof of your financial situation.

Because accident records are not public, the next section asks you to explain why you should be able to access them. “I am the subject of the record” is the right selection for the involved parties.

If you’re seeking a report for a family member, there is a separate box for this option, and you may need to attach a waiver.

The form also asks for standard contact information, including name, address, phone number, and email address. You will be contacted when the report is ready or if the Records clerk needs more information.

Do You Need an Accident Report to Use Your PIP Insurance?

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance of at least $3,000 is mandatory in Utah, a “no-fault” state for car accidents. However, it’s crucial to understand that not all car accidents are in the no-fault category.

You may only need a no-fault claim on your PIP insurance if your medical bills are $3,000 or less and you did not suffer a permanent disability, impairment, or disfigurement from your injuries.

Because PIP is no-fault insurance, your claim can’t be rejected based on fault, and you don’t need to prove that another driver caused the accident.

But many people have more than $3,000 in medical bills. Additionally, some accident cases begin with a no-fault claim, but as the injured person continues treatment, their bills quickly exceed the $3,000 limit.

When this happens, a claim on the at-fault driver’s insurance policy becomes necessary.

We recommend securing a copy of your car accident report and discussing it with an attorney before you begin the claims process. We can advise you of your options and help you protect your legal rights in case you need to make an at-fault claim later.
