The screeching of brakes and jolt of a collision can herald a number of coming problems. You may suffer painful injuries, lost income, car repair expenses, and new medical bills that arrive each day.

Yet, when you seek assistance from one or more insurance companies, you might find a new set of difficulties.

In Utah, Personal Injury Protection (PIP) claims are typically used for the first $3,000 in medical bills. This mandatory coverage provides a simple, no-fault option for paying minor medical bills after an accident.

However, it isn’t sufficient for more serious cases in which you have over $3,000 in healthcare costs or you suffer a permanent disability, disfigurement, or impairment.

An at-fault claim is possible in these situations, but you will need to show the other driver is responsible—at least primarily. Unfortunately, their insurance carrier may push back, suggesting you have partial or total responsibility.

An insurance adjuster might misinterpret something you say in your statement to imply you were to blame. They could also undervalue your damages or suggest your treatment is unnecessary.

While dealing with insurance companies can be overwhelming, it doesn’t have to be. Reviewing your police report with a skilled car accident attorney is a good first step to protecting your rights and securing the help you need.

How Can You Obtain a Payson Police Department Car Accident Report?

The Payson City Recorder’s Office provides an online form for requests through the Government Records Access & Management Act (GRAMA). When you fill out this form, you will need to include your standard contact information, such as name, address, phone number, and email address.

A dark colored car's front end with its bumper missing after a car accident.Next, you’ll be given space to describe the requested records. When possible, start with the case number, generally provided by the responding officer at the accident scene.

You should also state the date, location, and approximate time of the collision. The more specific you can be, the better—try to provide a nearby cross street, mile marker, or landmark in addition to the street name.

When this section is complete, you can choose how you want to review the records. Inspecting records is free, but most people want their own copy.

If you select this option, you will be asked to authorize the maximum amount of fees you’re willing to pay.

For reference, most accident reports are $10. There may be additional charges if you want photos on a CD or flash drive ($5).

If you would like the report mailed to you, actual postage will apply. In the event that your cost is estimated to be higher than the authorized amount, a city employee will contact you for further direction.

Due to privacy laws surrounding car accident reports, you should also check the box for “I would like to receive a copy of records that are private, controlled, or protected.” It’s followed by several other options to describe why you are entitled to access the records.

If you were a driver, passenger, injured person, or owner of an involved vehicle or damaged property, choose “I am the subject of the record.”

After you sign and date the form, mail or deliver it in person to:

405 West Utah Ave

Payson, UT 84651

You should allow ten business days to receive a response.

What Does PIP Insurance Cover?

Questions about PIP are common. Many people are confused about what is covered and what their other options might be if PIP doesn’t take care of all their damages. Here is what you need to know about PIP insurance:

  • PIP will pay for your medical bills from a car accident, regardless of fault, up to the policy limit. Utah only requires $3,000 in PIP coverage, but you can purchase a more extensive policy. Some people may also have extra coverage from optional Medical Payments (MedPay) insurance.
  • PIP might pay for up to 85 percent of your lost income if you are unable to work after an accident. However, this benefit is capped at $250 a week and may not be available if your medical bills have already reached the policy limit.
  • In some cases, PIP could pay a “special allowance” of $20 per day, if your injuries leave you unable to do household tasks and you have to hire someone.
  • PIP will not pay for your noneconomic damages like pain and suffering. However, if you qualify for an at-fault claim, you can seek these damages from the other driver’s liability insurance. Utah requires at least $25,000 in bodily injury liability insurance per person, $65,000 total.
  • PIP is only for injuries, not property damage. If you need assistance with car repairs, you can file a claim on the at-fault driver’s liability policy. In Utah, at least $15,000 in property damage liability insurance is required.
