Pleasant Grove Police Accident Reports

If you’ve been injured in a car accident, you may be dealing with pain and discomfort, a stream of expensive medical bills, lost income from missing work, and other obstacles. You will probably want to file an insurance claim, but what might seem like a straightforward process can quickly become complex.

The first step is determining the type of claim to pursue, which depends on the accident details.

Here are several types of claims you might be able to file after a car accident:

  • No-fault claims. In Utah, required Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance covers the first $3,000 of medical bills and related expenses (including lost wages). PIP provides no-fault coverage to take care of minor medical costs without the need to prove responsibility.
  • Additional no-fault coverage. While Utah only requires $3,000 in PIP coverage, you can buy a more significant policy. Medical Payments (MedPay) and Collision coverage offer additional protection for medical costs and vehicle damage. Not everyone has these policies because they’re optional, but if you do have them, they may be helpful in situations where you can’t prove another driver is at fault.
  • At-fault claims. If you have over $3,000 in medical bills or suffer a lasting disability, disfigurement, or impairment, you may be able to file a claim against the other driver’s insurance. In these cases, you will need to prove that the other driver was at fault, or at least primarily responsible (more than 50 percent). While this process can sometimes be simple, it may also involve disputes with the other driver or their insurance company, who could try to place the blame on you.
  • Property damage claims. PIP is only for injury-related expenses, not vehicle or property damage. To address car repairs and other damaged property, you can file a claim with the at-fault driver’s insurance, as required liability coverage includes protection for bodily injury and property damage.

The first step in filing any claim is to obtain a copy of your accident report and consult with a personal injury attorney who can explain your options for seeking compensation. If you have questions or concerns about your car accident, Valley Law Accident & Injury Lawyers is here to provide a free consultation.

Where Can You Get a Pleasant Grove Police Department Car Accident Report?

The Pleasant Grove City Recorder Office provides an online form for records requests. You may print it and complete the form or fill it out digitally and email it.

A white car whose headlight popped out after crashing into the rear end of another vehicle. We recommend including as much detail as possible about the record you need, starting with the case number. This should be located on a piece of paper the responding officer gave you at the accident scene.

If you can’t find the case number, state the date, approximate time, location of the collision, and all of the involved parties’ names. Due to state privacy laws, you should also mention your involvement in the accident (driver, passenger, vehicle owner, etc.).

The address for the City Recorder Office is:

Pleasant Grove, UT 84062

They are open Monday through Thursday from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM and Friday from 8 AM to Noon. You can submit the form in person or by mail.

You could also email the form to wthorpe@pgcity.org.

The office may take up to ten business days to respond to your request. If it’s approved, the fee is usually $35.

What if the Accident Report Says You Are at Fault?

If your injuries are mild and your expenses are lower than $3,000, the simplest solution is to use your PIP insurance.

However, many people experience more severe injuries and have extensive medical bills. If you believe an at-fault claim is in order, but the police report suggests you may be culpable, you should contact a car accident lawyer right away for several reasons:

  • We’ll review the report to ensure you’ve interpreted it correctly. Often, police reports are confusing to a layperson who isn’t used to studying them. If there’s a misunderstanding, we’ll explain it.
  • We’ll consider contributing factors. A police report contains a long list of “contributing factors” in an accident, and the responding officer can select as many as they believe are applicable. In many cases, both drivers are responsible for some of these factors. If so, we’ll work to determine how much fault you have. It may only be a small amount, so you could still recover some of your damages.
  • If warranted, we can investigate the accident further. Sometimes, a client tells us a contributing factor has been incorrectly attributed to them. When this occurs, we might thoroughly investigate and learn more about the crash. If we find evidence to support their version of events, we may be able to challenge the report.

Even if you think you’re at fault, it’s still a good idea to seek legal advice. Many people believe they caused an accident without having all the information about what happened.

We suggest you keep any theories about fault to yourself until you can speak with an attorney.
