If you or a loved one have recently been in a car accident, you may be dealing with pain, lost income from missing work, expensive car repairs, and other challenges. You could be considering an insurance claim or have already filed one.

However, insurance claims can sometimes introduce more difficulties. Some people start with a no-fault claim on their mandatory Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance, then need to make a second claim if their medical bills exceed the $3,000 limit.

When an at-fault claim is filed, the insurance adjuster could try to blame you, either denying your claim or reducing the settlement. They might also underestimate your damages.

What can you do to protect your interests and obtain the settlement you deserve? We recommend you acquire a copy of your police car accident report and consult with an experienced car accident attorney.

If you need help with your accident report or claim, please contact Valley Law Accident & Injury Lawyers for a free consultation to explore your options.

How Can You Get Your South Jordan Police Department Car Accident Report?

You can request your car accident report using the South Jordan Police Department’s online form. First, you’ll fill out standard contact information, including your name, address, phone number, and email address.

A totaled grey car on the side of the road with windshield wipers extended as it waits for repairs.Next, you’ll be asked to describe the record you’re seeking. If you have the case number (usually found on paperwork provided by the responding officer), start with that.

You should also add the following:

  • The accident location, including the city, county, and address. If your accident happened on a street and wasn’t close to a particular address, try to find a nearby mile marker or landmark you can reference.
  • Date range for the records. Hopefully, you can find the exact date of the accident, which will make your request easier to process.
  • Names of involved parties. You should always exchange names, contact info, and insurance info with the other driver at an accident scene. If you know the names of other parties, such as passengers or witnesses, include these. If not, you can use your name and the other driver’s name.
  • Subject of the request. As long as you were involved in the collision, you can use your name and mention how you were involved—driver, passenger, injured party, owner of involved property, etc.

Because car accident records are restricted under Utah’s Government Records Access and Management Act (GRAMA), you’ll need to explain why you should have access to this record in the following section. Again, you can select “I am the subject of the record” if you were an involved party.

The “authorized representative” option is typically used by attorneys or insurance agents for involved parties.

Once you’ve completed the form, submit it with or without the option to print the form.

If you prefer to place a request in person, you can visit the South Jordan Town Center during normal business hours at this address:

South Jordan Town Center

1600 West Towne Center Drive

South Jordan, UT 84095

Please bring your state-issued ID and any paperwork you were provided at the scene.

How Long Will It Take to Process a Car Accident Report Request?

The South Jordan Police Department will process the request as quickly as possible, but the time frame can vary depending on how busy they are. In most cases, it should not take longer than ten business days to respond to your request.

If you haven’t heard anything after this period, please call (801) 446-HELP for assistance.

How Much Does It Cost to Obtain a Car Accident Police Report?

As of July 1, 2024, the fee for an accident report is $15.

What if Your Request Is Denied?

The most likely reason for a request being denied is that the records clerk does not believe you should have access to the records. As discussed earlier, people who are directly involved in an accident are usually entitled to access the records.

It’s possible there may be an error on the form, or for some reason, your name is not mentioned in the police report. This type of clerical error can usually be cleared up with a phone call.

Parents or legal guardians of an involved minor should be able to access an accident report on the minor’s behalf. The records clerk may ask you to submit further documentation to establish your parental relationship so they can release the record to you.

If you weren’t involved in the accident but believe you should have access to the report, please discuss the matter with your attorney. We may be able to help you get a copy if the accident affects your legal rights.

Do You Need a Police Report to File a PIP Claim?

You don’t have to have one, but it’s still a good idea to pursue a copy for several reasons:

  • Due to rising healthcare costs, your medical bills could quickly exceed $3,000. If you need to make an at-fault claim, it’s helpful to be prepared.
  • If the other driver has medical bills over $3,000 and believes you are at fault, they could make a claim on your liability insurance. Reviewing the police report with an attorney can help you be ready for a situation where the other party or their insurer might try to blame you for the collision.
