Syracuse Police Accident Reports

Located between the Great Salt Lake and Interstate 15, Syracuse has a quickly expanding population. Along with more people come more cars and the possibility of car accidents. If one of these collisions has caused you injuries, you could be in pain, out of work, and dealing with a flood of medical and car repair bills.

How can you secure the help you need to get back on your feet?

Most people begin with an insurance claim. Utah requires $3,000 in Personal Injury Protection or PIP insurance, a no-fault policy that will address minor injuries after a car accident without the need to prove fault.

However, PIP may not cover all your damages. You might need to consider an at-fault claim in the following situations:

  • Your medical bills are more than $3,000.
  • You suffered a permanent disability, disfigurement, or impairment due to the collision.
  • A loved one lost their life in the accident.

At-fault claims are often more difficult because the insurance adjuster can reject your claim if they believe you are at fault. Or, they might try to reduce your settlement if they think you were partly responsible.

It’s hard to know if you will need an at-fault claim, as medical costs can rise with continuing treatment. To be prepared for the possibility, we advise that you secure a copy of your police report and discuss it with an experienced car accident lawyer.

Where Can You Get Your Syracuse Police Department Car Accident Report?

You can request your report online, in person, or by mail. The online request form is found here, and a printable PDF version is available for mailed or in-person requests.

Two drivers on a road looking at the collision between their two vehicles. The form requires basic contact information (name, address, phone number, email address) and a description of the records you need. Start with the case number, which is usually located on a piece of paper provided by the responding officer. If you misplaced this paper during the hectic time after your accident, you should give the location, date, and approximate time of the collision.

Include the names of all involved parties (to the best of your knowledge).

You’ll be asked if you want to view the records or receive a copy. Viewing the records is free, but buying a copy allows you to have it for reference later.

Police reports are typically $10, with additional charges if your request takes longer than an hour for a records clerk to research. You can also pay $15 for a report with photos from the accident scene delivered by email or $20 for the pictures on a CD.

Traffic accident reports are not available to the general public under Utah law but are accessible to involved parties or their representatives. For this reason, you will be asked to explain why the records should be available to you.

If you are a driver, passenger, injured party, or owner of an involved vehicle or damaged property, you can choose “I am the subject of the record.”

If you are the parent or legal guardian of an involved minor, use the “Other” option and explain that you are requesting the record on behalf of your child.

When using the online form, you can click “Submit” when you’re done. If you plan to mail the form or drop it off in person, the Syracuse Police Department address is:

Syracuse Police Department

1751 South 2000 West

Syracuse, UT 84075

They are open Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM.

What if You Are at Fault in a Car Accident?

Before you do anything else, we recommend you talk to a lawyer to determine if you really are at fault. In the meantime, don’t admit fault at the scene or discuss your concerns with anyone else.

People are often incorrect about the cause of an accident, and we’ve met more than one person who thought they were at fault when they weren’t.

If you are at fault, you may not be solely responsible. A large number of accidents are jointly caused by both drivers’ errors.

In many cases, one party is primarily responsible, while the other has a lesser share of fault.

Utah law allows an injured party with some fault to recover damages if they are less than 50 percent responsible. Their percentage of fault will be deducted from their damages before the final settlement.

So, if you are 25 percent responsible, you could still recover 75 percent of your losses.

The caveat is that one or more insurance adjusters will decide how much fault each party has. They could overestimate how much fault you have, resulting in a smaller payment than you deserve.

Fortunately, you can protect your interests by engaging a seasoned car accident lawyer. We can also assess your level of fault and push for a more equitable evaluation of your culpability if we feel the insurance company’s estimate is inaccurate.
